The Beetle is supposed to get downsized engines in Europe, including 105bhp 1.2-litre, a 160bhp 1.4-litre and 210bhp 2.0-litre petrols and new 105bhp 1.6-litre and 140bhp 2.0-litre TDIs. In the US, the 170bhp 2.5-litre five-cylinder petrol engine continues.
A hybrid version may also happen, using the drivetrain which debuted in the Jetta NCC concept at this year’s Detroit show which mated a 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine with a 27bhp electric motor, says Auto Express.
There will be a few noticeable changes in the new Beetle’s design. It is said that the new bug will have a reworked chassis with wider tracks and a longer wheelbase. The design will be similar to the one in the Ragster concept as shown in 2005, design boss, Klaus Bischoff, hinted. The roofline will be similar to the Ragster’s. Also, much of the design will also retain the older Beetle design framework with its original round headlights and tail lamps, confirmed an industry insider.
