Famous Leonardo Da vinci painting "Monalisa" continues to baffle its appreciators. Art experts have discovered tiny painted symbols in the eyes of the Leonardo Da Vinci's most famous portrait the Mona Lisa which is hanging in the Louvre in Paris.
The experts - from Italy's National Cultural Heritage committee - discovered the mysterious hidden message while studying magnified images of the 500-year-old portrait.
Art historian and president of the National Committee for Cultural Heritage Silvano Vinceti said the letters 'LV' are found in the right eye and concluded it most likely symbolises the initials of the artist.
Letters were also found in the left eye and, although they are hard to decipher, appear to be either an E, C or B.
"To the naked eye the symbols are not visible but with a magnifying glass they are clearly seen."
"We know Da Vinci used symbols so we are confident that they are a message from him," he said.
Historians started examining the painting after fellow committee member Luigi Borgia found a book in an antique shop, referring to the eyes of the Mona Lisa as being filled with secret symbols.
The mystery mirrors the revelations in Dan Brown's bestselling novelThe Da Vinci Code, which tells the story of Da Vinci's paintings containing hidden messages.
Many are of the opinion that the letters may be a clue to the identity of the female model in the painting, which has been an enduring mystery for ages.
